James D. Muccio, MD Orthopedic Surgeon

James Muccio, MD, is an Orthopedic Surgeon dual Board Certified in Orthopedics & Sports Medicine for over Twenty years. His specialty & practice focus includes: fracture care (all bones); arthroscopic & minimally invasive surgery of the shoulder (rotator cuff and labral repairs) & knee (meniscal tear debridement & repair, cartilage restoration); joint replacement surgery for Knees, Hips, & Shoulders; Nerve Decompressions (Carpal Tunnel Release, Ulnar Nerve Decompressions, etc); as well as major Ligament and Tendon Repairs & Reconstruction (ACL Reconstruction, Biceps, Quadriceps, Patellar, & Achille’s Tendon Repairs, etc). Dr. Muccio is especially interested in Shoulder & Knee Injuries & Sports Medicine. He received his sports medicine training under Dr. William Garrett, the former team physician for the US Women's National Soccer team & Carolina Hurricanes (a professional ice hockey team in Raleigh). He treats both adult and pediatric patients with an emphasis on both Non-Operative & Surgical Treatment Protocols.

Prior to becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon Dr Muccio spent the first eight years of his professional career as an Aerospace Engineer with NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA). As a Space Shuttle Flight Instructor and Space Station Design Engineer he became intrigued by the effects of spaceflight missions on the human body. Eventually he pursued his medical degree at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and later completed his Orthopedic Residency at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He earned a Master of Science degree in Physiology &Biophysics from Georgetown University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Notre Dame. The author of numerous articles &technical documents Dr. Muccio has spoken locally &nationally on the effects of microgravity (zero gravity) on the human body.

Dr. Muccio enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter and twin sons, traveling, golfing, skiing, and playing racquetball
